Why your family photo album is the most important thing you’ll order after your session

Hi, I'm Jasmyn Coleman, a Phoenix motherhood and boudoir photographer based on the Phoenix. So glad you're here.

Two family photo albums in cream organic linen and blush pink suede paired with mini duplicates.

As a Phoenix Portrait Photographer, I hear this constantly from mothers when they reach out for maternity and newborn photos: they loved their wedding photos, but never actually printed them. And it’s exactly why I talk to every single family about ordering a family photo album. You hired a photographer, you cried when you saw the gallery, you downloaded the files, and then six months later, you realized you still hadn’t printed a single photo. Sound familiar? You’re not alone.

Growing up, I always loved flipping through old albums when visiting with grandparents and relatives. It creates a level of obsession in the nostalgia of seeing yourself and loved ones from a time that no longer exists. For me personally, my maternal grandmother and matriarch passed before I was born. If it weren’t for these family photo albums, I would’ve never had a face to her stories.

Creating a legacy begins with one person. Someone who’s vigilant in knowing that time never stands still and knows these moments will serve a future purpose.

What’s the difference between a photo book and a professional album?

Consumer photo books just don’t have the same effect as a professional heirloom family photo album. The cover material, image quality, color accuracy, and overall layout of the album feel underwhelming.
When working with a professional photo lab, the longevity of your album is determined by the materials, binding, and page construction. Every element is intentionally chosen to ensure structure, durability, and a timeless heirloom quality. The lab I work with prioritizes archival materials and fine craftsmanship, so your album is designed to last for generations.

Each custom family album is handcrafted using:

  • Archival-grade printing- traditional silver halide printing, calibrated to my specific editing style, giving images sharper detail and better skin tones, and less fading over time.
  • Natural cover materials- 100% pure European linens and genuine Italian leathers that beautifully age
  • Layflat spreads- each spread is creased in the center for a seamless layflat design, so images run edge to edge for a gorgeous panoramic view
  • Thick, rigid pages- built to be turned thousands of times without cracking, yellowing, or losing their structure

Not only are the materials important, but so is the design. A professionally designed album isn’t just a grid of your favorite images dropped onto a template. Instead, it’s a sequence following the emotional storytelling of your session in a curated, intentional way.

The goal of the album is not to be tucked away in a glass case but instead to be enjoyed throughout decades of use.

Your hard drive is not a family photo album(and here’s why that matters)

Take a moment and imagine you and your loved ones gathered together 20 years from now. How do you picture looking back at family memories? In your hands, or on a screen?

Because right now, the honest version of the screen scenario looks like everyone huddled around a phone, trying to remember a password to an account you may or may not still be paying for, hoping your images are still being stored.

The truth is hard drives fail and only have a lifespan of 3-5 years. Cloud services change their terms, raise their prices, or shut down…and you’ve missed the email. Phones get lost or updated, and the transfer doesn’t go perfectly. A laptop dies. A subscription lapses. File formats change, and suddenly your lifetime storage is obsolete(we’ve already seen this happen with VHS and DVD).

And while you may have your favorite images ‘saved,’ they often get ignored in your camera roll amongst thousands of other images from your daily life.

Contrast that with your little ones snuggled up under your arms, a candle flickering in the background, and turning each page, describing the events of that day.

Consider what goes into a portrait session: the time you carved out of an ordinary day of the week, the vulnerability of being in front of the camera, the investment you made because this is your world, and this season of life matters to you.

While professional photography studios, like mine, do our best to maintain backup systems and file retention, those systems have limits, too. Don’t leave life’s most precious moments to chance.

The photos your kids will actually be grateful for someday

When most parents think about family photographs, they imagine preserving memories for themselves. But someday, these family photos will belong to someone else entirely.

Your children.

What often becomes most treasured over time isn’t a hard drive full of files; instead, it’s tangible items that survive generations: a ring, a quilt, a framed portrait hanging in the hallway.

Things that you hold are what carry a family’s story forward.

There’s something special that happens when a child sits down with a physical album. Suddenly, an image becomes a connection. They finger through pages, eagerly excited to see themselves. Yet as they get older, they start to question:

“Who is that?”

“How old was I and what was I like?

“Was this our first house?

Having a family photo album in their hands helps them feel who they are and where they come from. Seeing themselves as babies, as toddlers, as part of the family that they thought they were worthy of documenting, which gives proof of belonging, continuity, and love.

Digital files definitely have their place, but they were never designed to become heirlooms. Technology changes constantly. As previously mentioned, hard drives fail, and platforms disappear. Entire years of photographs quickly vanish.

A well-made album will outlast every device, platform, and subscription charge your family will ever face. It will be easily accessible on your bookshelf or coffee table for years.

An heirloom album will be what your children treasure as they hold their own baby, looking back at who they were and how they were loved.

And they’ll be grateful someone made it happen.

The real reason most families never print their photos

Often during consultation calls, I hear moms sharing stories about their first baby and how they never actually got around to printing their photos. Maternity leave wasn’t nearly as “free” as they imagined- in fact, it quickly flew by. The idea of sitting down to sort through hundreds of beautiful images of your baby suddenly feels overwhelming. Finding a quality print lab, figuring out sizing, comparing albums, navigating confusing ordering systems… it takes an entire naptime, and usually more than one. So the order doesn’t get placed.

It becomes a chore and quickly falls to the bottom of the to-do list.

Most Arizona families fully intend to print their photos. They share them with family and friends, but the longer they wait after receiving their gallery, the less likely it is ever to happen. Not because the photographs matter less, but because motherhood is already carrying so much.

That’s why I talk about albums and artwork before your session. When families have already imagined where these photographs will live…an album on the coffee table, or framed portraits in the entryway, the decision becomes emotional instead of logistical. It’s no longer “I should print these someday,” and instead becomes “These deserve a place in our home.”

And truthfully, almost every parent says the same thing at first: “I’ll probably print some on my own later.”

I completely understand the intention behind it, but after years of photographing families, I can tell you that “later” rarely comes.

The families who actually end up with albums on their shelves and framed photographs on their walls usually decide while the experience is still fresh. They treated their photographs as something worthy of completion, not another task to revisit when life finally slows down(spoiler alert: it doesn’t).

Here’s exactly what the family photo album process looks like

A week or so after your portrait session, we meet again for your Design and Ordering appointment. During this time, we go through each image in your gallery, one by one, allowing you to choose your favorites.

As you choose your favorites, don’t forget the little in-between moments and thoughtful details that help tell the full story of this season of life.

Next in the design process, we’ll design the cover of your family photo album. This part of the process technically starts during your wardrobe consultation when we discuss what to wear. Design selections include choosing a material, color, debossing, and messaging. When it comes to design selections, consider where the album will live in your home, whether they match the overall theme, and who you want to have the album someday.

This is your opportunity to personalize your album as a family Heirloom that gets passed down for generations to come.

Designing the layout of your photographs is easily the most stressful step, so I handle this for you. When designing your family photo album, I curate a story that feels beautiful, intentional, and evokes nostalgia.

Upon approval of the final design, the album is sent to my lab for production, where it’s treated with the utmost care and handcraftsmanship.  Because true mastery takes time, albums are delivered within 6-8 weeks after final approval.

Ready to turn your portrait session into a family photo album worth keeping forever?

If you know you never want to forget this season of life, always have a tangible piece of your heart, and easily relive a moment at your fingertips…having an heirloom portrait album will evoke more nostalgia than digital files ever could. A family photo album creates new memories as you and your loved ones gather around to tell stories. Years…decades from now, you’ll never regret having your album to pass down. If you’re ready to create photographs meant to be lived with for generations, I’d love to begin planning your session.

Personal story: My grandmother, the matriarch of my mother’s family, passed away before I was born. Yet somehow, I grew up knowing her. As a child, every visit to my grandfather’s house, I obsessed over the family albums that documented my grandmother’s life. I spent hours listening to stories of the kind woman she was, while also searching for pieces of myself. It helped fill in little gaps of wonder. They connected me to the lineage I came from and gave shape to the woman I was becoming. Through printed photographs and shared memories, I discovered that family albums hold so much more than faces. They preserve identity, belonging, and the stories that continue long after someone is gone.

F.A.Q.s

How long do professional family photo albums last?

Family photo albums are archival-quality and can last 100+ years when preserved with best care practices.

Are professional photo albums worth it?

Absolutely! The quality and craftsmanship of a professional photo album preserve the longevity and integrity of your photographs better than consumer labs.

When should I order my family photo album?

Album production takes 6-8 weeks to deliver, so plan your session several weeks in advance to receive your family photo album by a certain date. Consider the session date, editing time, and album design approval(2-3 weeks) within the processing time.

Can I add an album after my session?

Yes! Contact me at hello@jasmynsambac.com to place an heirloom album order.
