If you’re expecting a baby, you’re probably asking yourself:
Of course, as a photographer, I’m going to say ‘Absolutely! Maternity photos ARE worth it!” BUT, I want to truly break it down for you WHY you should get maternity photos. Too often I hear moms say “Oh! Don’t worry about me…just focus on the kids.” This is a classic line often heard from moms, and sadly even moms-to-be who haven’t quite experienced motherhood yet.
I hear this line most as a photographer…” I want updated photos of the kids this year…” or “I’ll just skip maternity photos and just get newborn photos.” I understand that sometimes your budget allows for just one session. Still, the majority of the time, the response is in relation to mom not feeling worthy/beautiful/in-shape/insert whatever quality mom-to-be thinks that she isn’t enough of.
I’m here to say that it’s simply not true. YOU deserve to be in your family photos too. You should be in your photos.
Firstly, each step of your pregnancy journey is part of your story. The path you had to take is part of what got you to the end, which in this case, delivering your baby. I understand that pregnancy is hard. It’s not always pretty and “Oh, look at my cute bump!” all of the time. Your body is going through hell most of the time. You’re uncomfortable, exhausted, sick with pregnancy-related illnesses, and mom-brain has you feeling like you’ve lost your mind!
You’re not being dismissive of any of that, but it’s part of your story. No, it’s not the most glamorous part of your story, but it’s still something you will remember for years to come.
Documenting your pregnancy actually shows the amount of strength that you have grown within those 9 months. And, believe it or not, one day you just may miss having your baby safe in your belly. Your maternity photos will remind you of the woman you became in the process of bringing your baby into the world. Why wouldn’t you want photos to remind you how amazing you are?
One day, your children are going to ask to see photos of your pregnancy. They’re going to wonder what you looked like, what life what like then. I often say photographs from your sessions aren’t just for you…they’re for your children, their children, and everyone else close to you.
When your children see these photos of you, they’re going to say “Mom, you look so beautiful!” You’ll think “Wow, but this was going on.. that was happening… I was feeling like this…” You’ll start telling them the story of what was going on in your life at that time when you were pregnant with them. This is how those family stories start to evolve and get passed down for generations, by the way. Your children are going to look at you with so much more admiration and inspiration than before. They’re going to learn what you went through to bring them into the world, to make their life, and this was only the beginning. They already see what you do for them on a daily basis, but to know that this was the beginning of it all and here you are still showing up!
You are beautiful!
You are worthy!
I’m not saying that to be nice. I’m saying it because it is the truth! You’re going to see yourself the way the rest of us see you: looking like a gorgeous Queen! It is easy to be hard on yourself, especially because of the negative points mentioned in the first example. I understand that it may be hard to feel beautiful. Between the mood swings and physical ailments that come with pregnancy. It can be hard to keep your self-esteem up. But, trust me when I say that you are glowing! You’re creating life, how much more amazing can you be?
A maternity photo session is a great way to pamper and treat yourself before your baby arrives. You will spend the day forgetting about the woes of pregnancy and instead embracing the reasons why you are pregnant. Your little one is almost here so celebrate YOU in the meantime.
Jasmyn Sambac Photography provides you with wardrobe and styling assistance which allows you to dress up without spending extra money on something you may only wear once. I often recommend moms treat themselves to a manicure/pedicure and have professional hair & makeup. After your session, you can enjoy a night out for a special dinner or continue on to a prenatal massage.
Pregnancy is full of wonderment! You’re excited to find out the color of your baby’s eyes and hair, who’s nose they have, what will their personality be like.
This is a time to appreciate the connection and bonding moments between you and your partner, your baby, and your family(if there are siblings) that will fill your heart to the fullest. Take the time to slow down and truly feel what is happening. Doing so is what truly brings out the natural beauty of pregnancy.
