When it comes to planning a fall family photoshoot, as a Phoenix Portrait Photographer the number one question I get asked is, “What should we wear for our session?” I want to take away some of the stress by sharing my favorite tips for choosing The Perfect Oufits for your Fall Family Photos.
Having a cohesive look amongst the family creates harmony in your photographs. But, it’s important not only to look good but also to feel good in your family photographs.
It can be overwhelming to find the perfect outfit for not only yourself but also your entire family. Running from store to store and making multiple online shopping orders and exchanges can be exhausting. At Jasmyn Sambac Photography, I offer a client wardrobe with outfits for moms, young children up to 5 years old, and shirts for dads to alleviate some of the stress.
Lifestyle family photography is about capturing this season of life as it is, allowing children to be children. We document the sweet gentleness of childhood and the chaotic and fun moments. Sessions with me at Jasmyn Sambac Photography are child-led and play-based. We slow down and take our time to capture genuine connections, creating nostalgic photographs that transform into heirloom artwork.
When planning your fall family photos, start with Mom. Remember, you’re the heart of the family, and your confidence and grace will shine through in every photograph. Your elegance sets the tone for the entire session. By starting with mom, choose timeless, sophisticated pieces to create a cohesive and exquisite look for your family’s portraits, ensuring every image is a work of art to be cherished for generations. Keep in mind, that you can never be “too dressy” or look too good.
Aim for a cohesive color palette, incorporating a mix of shades and a few accent colors. Wearing neutrals, earth tones, and muted colors evokes a romantic, timeless elegance. Rich creams and ivory, muted hues such as sage green, medium blues, dusty pinks, and rust orange, seamlessly blend to create a sophisticated and harmonious look. These colors gently guide the eye across each subject. To maintain visual interest, I recommend limiting each color to no more than two family members; otherwise, the image risks appearing flat.
Incorporating the right amount of texture adds depth and detail to your outfits. Layer cardigans and sweaters for added dimension. Consider fabric materials such as organic cotton and linen, and the softness of cashmere and merino wool for a cozy feel. Accessories can add a final touch of character, but don’t overdo it! Opt for dainty jewelry, a stylish watch, and a belt to create a polished and finished look.
Patterns should be used sparingly. I recommend dressing only one family member in a pattern that compliments the overall color palette. Avoid large prints and busy patterns as they can distract the eye. Subtle patterns draw interest, particularly in close-up shots, adding rich storytelling elements to your photo gallery.
I love dressing women in flowing dresses, from luxurious fabrics, and classic silhouettes that enhance their natural beauty. Choose a color that is flattering to your skin tone. And build the rest of the family’s outfit and color palette around yours. Neutrals, Earth tones, and muted tones work beautifully on almost everyone.
For fall family photos, I recommend wearing something comfortable, yet stylish like a long-sleeved maxi dress or blouse and skirt paired with a cardigan or shawl. This combination allows for ease of movement throughout your photo session. If you’re currently nursing, select a cut that enables easy access to feed your baby.
To complete the look, consider accessorizing with simple, elegant jewelry and a stylish, yet comfortable pair of shoes, such as ballet flats or ankle booties.

A casual, fitted look for dad works wonderfully for fall family photos. A button-down or Henley-style shirt paired with chinos and a pullover sweater creates a timeless look. For a dressier more sophisticated appearance, opt for a sports jacket and dress slacks. Layering is a great idea, as it allows for adjustments based on weather. Coordinate Dad’s outfit to accentuate what Mom is wearing to ensure a cohesive color palette.
Footwear should be comfortable and suitable for the desert terrain. Polished dress casual shoes such as oxfords, derbies, Chelsea boots, or dress sneakers complement the rest of the outfit well. I recommend choosing brown or tan and avoiding black-colored shoes.
Add a nice belt and a luxury watch to complete the look. Avoid wearing hats and sports watches.

When dressing your baby for your fall family photoshoot, aim for a balance of softness and snugness that complements the family’s overall look. Soft, cozy organic cotton outfits are ideal for keeping your little one comfortable and warm. Onesies and rompers can be paired with thick-footed tights for girls or pants and overall sets for boys. Layering with a cardigan or knitted sweater adds both warmth and texture.
Soft booties or ballet flats in complementary colors work well and keep their tiny feet cozy. Accessories like a bonnet or delicate hairbow can add a touch of personality without being overwhelming.
Keep the outfit practical, allowing for easy diaper changes and freedom of movement. Avoid bulky and overly complicated outfits that may bunch up while they’re snuggled in your arms.

When dressing young children for fall family photos, keep in mind the same principles you would yourself. Choose outfits that are comfortable and allow high-functioning mobility. Children like to play and run, and family photo sessions with Jasmyn Sambac Photography are child-led, playful, and active for children. Their outfit should accommodate the color palette to blend cohesively with the rest of the family.
For girls, dresses with knit and long-sleeved blouses paired with skirts work beautifully. Layer the outfit with a cardigan or knitted sweater. For added warmth and comfort, knitted tights and knee-high socks keep the outfit classic and elegant.
For boys, outfits like overalls with a long-sleeved Henley-style shirt or similar combinations inspired by dad’s look are perfect for little ones. If choosing a one-piece outfit, opt for thicker materials like velvet or wool work best to provide warmth without causing them to overheat.
Footwear for children follows the same guidelines as for parents. Dress casual booties, ballet flats, and dress sneakers will keep their feet protected with an elegant flair.
Accessories can include bow-ties and hair pieces such as a simple hairbow or headband. To add an extra layer of personality, simple jewelry such as a dainty bracelet or necklace elevates the overall look.
Bonus: To help keep them excited and interested in your fall family photoshoot, let them be involved in the process! You can do so by allowing them to “pick out their own outfits”(that you’ve pre-selected), giving them a sense of control and participation.

In the final preparation for your family photos, remember the small details matter too. Before your session, I recommend laying out or coordinating with your photographer prior to your session on final outfit selections. Tidy up your clothing by removing all wrinkles and checking for pet dander.
It’s a wonderful idea to have a backup outfit choice for each family member. Accidents and wardrobe malfunctions occasionally happen and you’ll want to be prepared with an alternative option.
