As a Cake Smash Photographer in Phoenix, I do first-year photoshoots differently than what’s commonly seen. I take a simple, timeless approach to finding the beauty in the seemingly mundane. This means focusing on the quiet amongst the chaos and capturing genuine connections. If you’re already familiar with my brand as a Motherhood Portrait Photographer, then you know the importance I highlight of involving all immediate family members in photographing milestone moments in your lives.
My goal is always to help you be present in your family photographs, even as a Cake Smash Photographer here in Phoenix. As a mother, you can never have too many photographs of you with your growing child(ren). With each milestone, this is another chance for you to document a time when you were there right by your child’s side; soothing and comforting them, or laughing at their silly nature.
“Creating your child’s childhood is simultaneously creating your motherhood.”
This couldn’t be further from the truth. We have the opportunity to make the most of where we are in our current season of life. You know things won’t always be this way so you want to embrace it while you can, even if it’s sometimes hard and pushes your limits. The joy and heartwarming moments empower you to continuously show up and persevere because you have these beautiful little souls relying upon and rooting for you!
When to schedule your cake smash photoshoot?
You don’t have to schedule your first-year photoshoot on their birthday. But, when to schedule your baby’s first-year photoshoot can depend on a few things. Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
Do you want your photos back in time for announcements/birthday party invites?
If you would like their photos back BEFORE their first birthday to use for announcements and invites, then you’ll want to schedule when your baby is around 10 months old. This allows time for us to plan the session and get your digital images and print products back to you in time.
Do you want your child walking or able to stand on their own?
Some children don’t start walking on their own until 14 months or even later. That’s totally okay! You can wait to schedule your session a few months after their first birthday and still capture the newly 1-year-old magic.
Are you a Portrait Collective member?
If you are enrolled in my signature Portrait Collective Membership or “Baby’s First-Year Plan”, then you’ll want to make sure you schedule your baby’s first-year photoshoot before the 18-month period ends.

If your little one is soon turning one, I’d love to photograph your family during this special milestone.
