10 Essential Tips for Stunning Studio Maternity Photos

filed under:

Maternity

Hi, I'm Jasmyn Coleman, a Phoenix motherhood and boudoir photographer based on the Phoenix. So glad you're here.

You’ve scheduled your studio maternity photos, and your session date is approaching with both excitement and nervousness. The mood board is a vibe, and you can’t wait to see it come to life.

There’s inherent beauty in pregnancy. It’s important to take the time to slow down and celebrate yourself. This season of motherhood is comparatively short-lived compared to the future years of your child.

Since seeing the double pink lines of a positive pregnancy test, you’ve been researching and planning endlessly for baby’s arrival. As a phoenix maternity photographer, I help expecting mothers have a relaxing photoshoot by handling the bigger details. Making it easy for you to just show up and have a good time is my top priority. Follow these 10 essential tips listed below to feel best prepared for your studio maternity photos.

When to schedule maternity portraits

Plan for your maternity session to take place when you’re between 28-34 weeks pregnant. This is when your bump is visible, but you’ll still be comfortable moving around in poses with ease. That said, every pregnancy is unique, so trust your body and intuition. If you’re carrying multiples, consider scheduling your session earlier, as you may go into labor a few weeks before a singleton pregnancy.

If during this timeframe you’re on the cusp of a Phoenix Summer (hello, early June or late September!), think about your personal comfort levels, especially with heat and energy. Studio sessions are an ideal option during those warmer months, offering a cool, calm space where you can focus on feeling beautiful and present.

Creating the Perfect Session Day Atmosphere

Location and timing matter most when it comes to having timeless portraits. Expect your in-studio maternity session to be scheduled between late morning and early afternoon, when natural light softly pours in and creates that dreamy, glowy look I love to create photographs in.

Beauty & Skin Preparation for your maternity session

A little self-care goes a long way. A proper skincare routine before your maternity session will leave you with a glowing complexion. In the days leading up to your session:

  • Drink water & stay hydrated
  • Get plenty of rest
  • Schedule a manicure & pedicure
  • Visit your hairstylist for a fresh trim or to update your roots(for color changing, I recommend 2 weeks prior)
  • Avoid new skincare products that may irritate your skin

Think glow over glam. These tips will help create supple, radiant skin. Your natural beauty, enhanced by intentional preparation, will shine through your photographs.

Bonus tip: Reserve a prenatal massage or enroll in a prenatal yoga class for ultimate pampering in preparation.

Embrace Professional hair and makeup

Professional styling gives you the confidence to fully immerse yourself in this experience. As part of my Signature Session offer, professional hair and makeup are complimentary with your portrait session so that you can relax and feel elevated with no stress or second-guessing. This isn’t just about looking polished, but about feeling beautiful and pampered while being taken care of. I work closely with trusted professional HMUAs who work with various skin tones and textures, ensuring everyone feels their needs are met.

For petite milestone sessions, I recommend contacting your preferred HMUA or visiting a beauty boutique like The Sparkle Bar.

What to Wear: Styling tips for your studio maternity photoshoot

When planning outfits for your studio maternity photos, start with what you love, as you’re the heart of the family.

Have flexibility with forming silhouettes to accentuate the bump, but also the freedom to drape the bump simply and beautifully for soft connecting moments. In lifestyle maternity portraits, it is important to choose outfits that allow gentle movement that work with your body, allowing you to dance, sway, and possibly pick up a toddler or two. Think of textures like lace, chiffon, and cotton linen materials that photograph beautifully and feel feminine. With access to my curated client wardrobe, you’ll have elegant, comfortable pieces hand-selected to elevate your experience.

Jewelry and the right accessories elevate a look to completion. Opt for meaningful pieces that accentuate your outfit. And don’t forget to wear your favorite scent.

Prioritize dressing comfortably

Wear what makes you feel confident and most like you. When you’re comfortable in your clothing, it radiates through your body language and expressions, setting the tone for the entire session. Confidence isn’t just captured in how you look, but in how you feel.

Accentuate what you love most about your body, especially your bump. Likewise, avoid anything that draws focus to areas you feel less confident about. You deserve to feel at ease and beautiful in every frame.

Must have items to bring to your studio maternity photo session

Prior to your session, I’ll send over a detailed prep guide including everything you’ll need for a seamless maternity photoshoot. A few must-have items you’ll want to bring include:

  • Water and light snacks to stay energized
  • Nude or seamless undergarments
  • Sentimental keepsakes(like your ultrasound or a pair of tiny baby shoes)
  • A playlist of songs that make you feel grounded, joyful, or simply you

Little details like these help personalize your session and bring your story to life.

Preparing Partners, Siblings, and Pets

Your maternity photoshoot extends to immediate family, including your furbabies(upon request). Lifestyle maternity portraits are about slowing down and capturing this season of life perfectly imperfect. We follow the lead of little ones for genuine connection. No forced smiles or rigid rules. With a bit of clever planning, everyone will be excited for photos.

Together weeks before your session, we’ll coordinate the perfect outfits for everyone. Involve toddlers into picking out their outfit so they feel important and helpful in the process.

In the case of incorporating your pet, highly consider if your pet will do well in a new environment. If you know your pet is very energetic, have a friend or family member come along to keep them entertained.

Posing tips for natural, flattering photos

There’s an art to showcasing your beautiful bump in a way that feels both effortless and refined. Throughout your session, I’ll gently guide you through poses and subtle movements designed to flatter your body and highlight your pregnancy glow. From natural hand placements that create soft lines to thoughtful positioning that enhances your silhouette, every detail is considered with care.

Whether you’re reclining on a cozy bed, wrapped in delicate fabrics, or sharing a quiet moment with your partner, you’ll never need to worry about what to do next. I’ll offer just enough direction to keep things fluid while making space for authentic, candid moments to unfold. We’ll incorporate your partner and little one(s) naturally with no forced smiles or stiff poses, just connection, presence, and emotion. Most importantly, I encourage open communication during your session, so you always feel physically comfortable and emotionally at ease.

Communicate your vision with your maternity photographer

Your session should feel safe, supportive, and aligned with your vision. If there’s one thing I encourage, it’s openness. Share any preferences, concerns, or ideas ahead of time, and speak up during your session if something doesn’t feel right. I’m here to support you and your comfort.

Bonus tip for studio maternity photos: Capture this Beautiful chapter authentically

Allow yourself to let go of perfection and just show up as yourself. This season of motherhood is sacred, empowering, and intimately nostalgic. It’s deep and personal while quickly fleeting. Someday, you’ll miss the feeling of wonderment and having your baby safely tucked in your womb. And one day, your children will be looking for a photo of you, too.
